If you are like me, your curiosity about the way the world became what it is always gets the better of you. I am always trying to find out where the habits and activities we enjoy came from. Anything from arts to music to architecture and clothing design has come from a development through centuries of trial and error. These sciences have been developed to cater to specific needs for their use. The art of crocheting is one of those developments.

How did Crochet Start?

Crochet comes from a word in French known as “croq”. “Croq” means hook, and rightfully so since the main tool in crocheting is the hook. While crocheting didn’t become popular until the 1800′s, it is understood that the development of this art form started in several regions across the earth as diverse as South America, China and Arabia. The use of this craft didn’t become popular until after the development of the cotton gin, and it now used to produce beautiful household items such as clothing, blankets and tablecloths.

Why should I Crochet?

We are now living in a very well developed world. Textile industries have an army of machines at their disposal and the employees skilled to manage this production, but they cannot replace the feeling of genuine individuality that comes from crafts made by the hands of someone who cares. The most important gifts to my spouse and me have been the ones that were made by the giver. They are the gifts that tell you about who the giver is. Just one example is a quilt that my mother made for me when I was born. I used that little quilt until my body grew far too long to keep me under it. We remember the hand-made gift, and crocheting is an avenue we can learn so that our gifts can be special.

How Can I Crochet?

Basic crocheting really doesn’t take too much skill once you have it down. There is a rhythm that goes with the art. It simply requires the discipline to master it. Once you have it down you are going to be able to enjoy the beautiful masterpieces composed at your fingertips. Crocheting requires two basic items. You are going to need a hook. Some hooks are made of steel, plastic, wood, aluminum or other materials. It really doesn’t make a difference what the hook is made of, but you will need it. Select the yarn or thread that you want.

You will be starting with a slip knot and building a loop chain that will form the first row. All of your rows after that will build off of the chain of loops. You may be a little confused right now, but it will make sense with a quick visual guide. Enjoy this craft because it is going to be the start of many special moments for you and your family.
